Well here's a bit of a worry...

I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin, and noticed that under religion, it said:

"Christian: Assemblies of God"

The footnote leads to a PDF newsletter from "Juneau Christian Center", ran by a Pastor Mike Rose.

Anybody know if this is a AoG branch that's been steeplejacked??

On edit, she was also a member of the "Fellowship of Christian Athletes", which has heavy dominionist ties.

http://www.talk2action.org/story/2007/8/23/142836/277

"At least one member of Bearing Fruit's board of directors (T. Ray Grandstaff) is a former Senior VP for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. FCA has been linked to dominionism in numerous ways; they are well known for "bait and switch" evangelism (in fact, they and Athletes in Action are among the two groups most frequently banned from public school campuses due to bait-and-switch "altar calls" marketed as anti-drug talks to the school administration). More info here. (Such tactics are a favourite of dominionist groups explicitly targeting youth.) It's also well known (and, apparently, explicitly by design) that Fellowship of Christian Athletes rather aggressively "dominionist-ises" any team they are let into (this tends to be bad even within the NFL, but even more so within FCA groups run in colleges and high schools)."

If it's dominionist-affiliated, it would likely explain how she came out of nowhere to become the youngest governor in Alaska history, and the first female Alaskan governor. And it would explain how she got the nomination out of the many other more experienced people. Less dirt on her because she's so young, but she's just as corrupt as the rest of them.

I'm guessing that her being female also contributed heavily to her getting the nomination. There are lots of Clinton supporters who don't want to vote for Obama, and I suspect choosing a female running mate is McCain's way of trying to attract them.

Yeah, that caught my eye too. I'd be interested in hearing more about her connections there.

I thought AoG were steeplejackers, not steeplejacked.

I just read that item about her affiliation on Wikipedia and I surfed over her immediately.

[info]solarbird has some relevant commentary on the Theocon media's reactions to the announcement in a post here.

Basically, they're pretty happy about it, which means she's got to be pretty solidly Dominionist.

I found this - halfway down the page is a section on Mike Rose.

Very good catch! Take a look at this on that page:

"Mike is also an adviser on Rodney Howard-Browne's Revival Ministries committee, along with three or four other AOG pastors in the USA. He informed me that he had sat in over 110 of Rodney's meetings and been impressed by the lack of pressure and hype, but by the powerful anointing of the Spirit which accompanies this young man."

Now take a look at this:

http://www.deceptioninthechurch.com/madisonsquare.html

and

http://www.talk2action.org/story/2005/12/19/155228/97

"John Kilpatrick and Rodney Howard-Browne are listed as influential in spreading dominion theology per this link, which also details the relationship between "third wave" teachings, dominionism, and "word-faith" theology. (Howard-Browne is also influential in spreading "third wave" teaching in general and is often listed as the person who brought it to Toronto and later Brownsville; Howard-Brown and Cho are probably the two closest "parties of blame" for spread of "third wave" flavours of "spiritual warfare" dominionism.)"

The Wall Street Journal reports her religion as Lutheran. I'm more likely to trust WSJ over Wiki any day.

That said, it could be steeplejacked Lutheran, or false advertising somewhere down the research line.

Then again, someone on a different comm mentioned, in passing, something about Palin being Roman Catholic.

Perhaps a d_c member living in Alaska can report more accurately?

Well, the PDF file I linked to said this (page 8) (boldface mine)

"The opening night banquet of the 2008 Alaska District Council was honored to have Governor Sarah Palin address the delegates and guests. Governor Palin spoke of her appreciation for the Assemblies of God and requested that the Council pray for both her and the State of Alaska. Superintendent Ted Boatsman, who was Palin’s junior high pastor at Wasilla Assembly of God, along with Pastor Mike Rose of Juneau Christian Center, where Palin presently attends church when in Juneau, laid hands on the Governor and led the Council in prayer.

Palin, who was elected Governor in 2007, is Alaska’s youngest governor and the first female governor of the state. She just recently gave birth to her fifth child, Trig. Palin spoke of the faith challenge she faced when learning that Trig would be a Downs Syndrome child. However, she and her husband, Todd, believe that every child is a gift of God, deserving of life, and that God was asking them to accept His will for their lives.

The Alaska District Council believes that the State of Alaska is blessed to have a woman of faith and courage as Governor. ~Submitted by Lattis Campbell"

So according to that newsletter, she was AoG in Jr. High as well as currently.

Well, you've just scared the hell out of *this* Republican. I don't know what I'm going to do now-- stay home, I guess. I can't vote for her, but I really can't stand Obama either for any number of policy-related reasons. Well, fuck.

Some of my Republican friends are thinking seriously of writing in Ron Paul, (disclosure, I was a volunteer on Ron Paul's 1988 Libertarian Presidential Campaign), or voting for Bob Barr. McCain bugs them that much.

Okay, so [info]dogemperor's article needs to go on heavy rotation in as many places as possible, I'm thinking.

The links in that to places like Street Prophets will hopefully lead people to even more info.

That is damned scary.

As far as I can tell, she's Bush with breasts. Horrible choice but I guess we women are supposed to ignore all issues and vote for our gender. Hope it doesn't work.

Call me cynical but IMO McCain picked her for one reason, to try and tempt borderline Clinton backers into voting republican. Not that I'm against a woman in the White House, I did support Hillary in the beginning. But Palin is WAAYYY to inexperienced in national politics to be a viable player (never mind the fact that she seems to be another hard line GOP). I still consider Obama to be the best person for the job.

Don't know if [info]dogemperor found this, but there's an interesting quote I found to share:

[...] meteoric rise to political success as governor, just two short years ago Sarah Palin was the mayor of Wasilla. I had a good chuckle at MSN.com’s claim that she had been the mayor of “Wasilla City”. It is not a city. Just Wasilla. Wasilla is the heart of the Alaska “Bible belt” and Sarah was raised amongst the tribe that believes creationism should be taught in our public schools, homosexuality is a sin, and life begins at conception. She’s a gun-toting, hang ‘em high conservative. Remember…this is where her approval ratings come from. There is no doubt that McCain again is making a strategic choice to appeal to a particular demographic - fundamentalist right-wing gun-owning Christians.

Sigh. I've been doing some reading- and she is not who I would want to be a 'heartbeat away' from the presidency should McCain pop his clogs. I expect that the skeletons in her closets will be dragged out soon enough.

While I still have a few reservations about Obama, at least I think he'd turn this country back around, rather than drive it further into the dark ages.

Yup, saw the article, and it does confirm the possibility of her being put in as a "stealther" (just like the Christian Coalition would do with school boards on up in the '80s).

And yes, Wasilla is pretty much the Alaskan Bible Belt--I had misfortune many moons ago to work for a cable modem provider that serviced Wasilla. :P
