Is this more LJ censorship?

Although this isn't directly related to Dominionism please bear with me because I think it is relevant to us. If the mods don't feel it belongs here then feel free to delete but I wanted to get the news out and thought folks might be interested.

The Russian LJ-ers are currently complaining in LJ News that they are being censored (they fear by the KGB or similar government areas). As I understand it, they can't post the letters d-p-n-i without dashes.

The censorship of Russian LJ-ers is interesting enough and something that should obviously be addressed if true but what really interests me is that this may not be confined to the 'Russian area' of LJ but may be across the whole of LJ. I just tried a little test. I attempted to post the letters d-p-n-i in my journal. It failed twice, I got an LJ StreamError_1_54 message. I immediately tried with the word 'test', which posted instantly. I also attempted to post the disputed letters in LJ News without the dashes and it wouldn't post there either. I had to close my window, cut and paste and add the dashes in to be able to post my comment.

I know the site has been buggy as hell for days so I'd like a bit more data on this - does anyone else want to test this one out? Maybe it's a momentary glitch, maybe it is actual censorship. If it is censorship then it's definitely not confined to Russia as I'm in England and I already know of one America user, another Brit and someone in Switzerland who couldn't post the disputed letters either.

D-P-N-I or The Movement Against Illegal Immigration is a nasty far right wing anti-immigration movement in Russia. While The Movement Against Illegal Immigration (see Wikipedia for more info) is certainly not a political party that I would in any way support, I would like to know if it's an example of something else that it's banned in the New Improved LJ TM.

This is breaking news people, please help me test this and pass it on. I've already asked the Russian LJ-ers for more news.

This seems more than a little paranoid to me. But I just tried three times to post those four letters in this comment, and got the error message. Hmmmm!

(they fear by the KGB or similar government areas).

The internal part of the KGB is now the FSB.

Well, I can't do it, and yet "test" goes up no problems.

I even tried to edit the existing entry to switch to those letters, nothing. And tellingly, I tried to delete the entry as it stood, with those letters, and I couldn't until I'd changed them to the equally non-offensive "pies".

You know this is sad, but true:

The people who complained about the LJ censorship will probably not give a "rat's ass" because Russia is over-seas.

Interesting. I can't post that sequence of letters either. LJ just goes into a zombie-like state.

You can't list it as an interest either. LJ will just go into a perpetual load if you try.

Test? Well, maybe this is true, I can't seem to post it.

Before we all start seeing conspiracies

Maybe it exploits some flaw in the LJ code?

I'd be more inclined to believe that this is the case.

Simple experiment: I just tried to post a private message, with "This is a test." and the letters with no spaces in it.

It did not post.

I took out the letters and it posted immediately.

Seems to me that something is going on.

I just checked this with a friend who does a lot of programming. He said the only things he could think of were some sort of filter or some sort of spellchecker gone amok.

Please can people tell me where they're based, I've had confirmation that someone in Norway also can't post this letter string. Also, [info]zshesruk, a Russian LJ-er just told me this:

"I'm not sure how long have this been. Maybe for a couple of weeks, maybe even a month. I think everything started with the suspension of one the political community which ru_n_b_p is (the name of which you can't write also here). then it was restored. then some things like suspension of different users started (certainly not for porn!) going on, and actually there were no explanations given, as i recall. by the way, everyone who was suspended is connected with the "Other Russia" movement, i don't know if many of the people in the west know about this coalition (N_B_P party is a part of it). one of the days (maybe a week ago) russian part of the LJ was cut from the server for several hours. later it was explained that attacks on the n_b_p community influenced the whole LJ and they had to cut the russian segment... I hope that someone will add something or correct me if i messed up smth."

Son of a bitch, that's weird. I couldn't even post from Semagic. I can do it if the letters are separated by a space, though.

Connecticut.

Can't post. LJ just goes into perpetual load for me.

I tried it via email post. Post was rejected.

I tried it via my Blackberry which logs out of Ontario, Canada on an IP tracker and it froze my Blackberry browser.

Can't here in Mississippi, either. Very, very odd.

June 4 2007, 00:35:53 UTC 4 years ago

Interesting, there's another phrase as well quoted from the news:

I thik that it is not quite right that users cannot write now in our Jj words "n b p" and "D P N I".
See here:
http://dictator-of-rus.livejournal.com/78164.html?mode=reply
and here:
http://senatov.livejournal.com/175077.html?mode=reply
And I cannot write this words here too.

Both of which apply to the same political group? Am I following that correctly?

[info]devilindupriest

June 4 2007, 00:39:27 UTC 4 years ago

Oh, and the news starts hereish:
http://news.livejournal.com/99650.html?page=35#comments

Some really clear comments from the Russians and Euros that this isn't just a random fluke of code.

[info]nleseul

June 4 2007, 00:47:13 UTC 4 years ago

Hm. In Florida, D**I fails to post. NBP, the other acronym noted a couple comments above this one, seems to work fine.

[info]rubberbandiv

June 4 2007, 00:47:14 UTC 4 years ago

That is weird

Let's not call it a conspiracy just yet. Someone find more banned ones!

[info]fooltheworld

June 4 2007, 00:49:48 UTC 4 years ago

I tried posting both acronyms in my journal, from LJ directly, using Semagic and a voice post. I also tried commenting with them. No dice on all of the above. Now interestingly, although I could not transcribe my voice post, the auto transcriber did. And I am in the US. It's worth mentioning as well that Russian communities are also being deleted without explanation and unrelated to the pedophile brouhaha.

[info]fooltheworld

June 4 2007, 00:51:25 UTC 4 years ago

OK, I just saw [info]nleseul's comment and I had both acronyms, let me try just the NBP.

[info]fragiletender

June 4 2007, 00:57:22 UTC 4 years ago

OK, just heard from someone from LJ and he said the following:

"It's not "banned", but it is blocked from LJ, at least temporarily -- part of deterring the DDOS we were experiencing included blocking content with that text, because we were getting hit so hard with that exact text that it was killing the site. I don't expect that it'll stay that way for long, but at least short-term, it's the only way we can keep LJ running. :-/"

So according to LJ, definitely not censorship but now I'm really curious as to why the DDOS attacks include this phrase, especially since it's a right-wing group. Unfortunately I'm certainly not tech-y enough to track that one down!

[info]sunfell

June 4 2007, 02:09:24 UTC 4 years ago

Lots of DDOS attacks come from Russia. And Eastern Europe.

[info]twistedchick

June 4 2007, 01:03:46 UTC 4 years ago

I posted a link to this post and asked friends to check. It seems to be related to the DDOS that LJ is suffering -- apparently, the attacks contain these letters in this order.

[info]fragiletender

June 4 2007, 01:21:43 UTC 4 years ago

Yep, that's what someone from LJ has just confirmed.

[info]guma_kawauso

June 4 2007, 01:13:49 UTC 4 years ago

On behalf of a friend, I present the following in regards to this matter:

[info]duskwuff here, pasted by a friend as he's not a member:
Judging from the server response, I think that the word "DPNI" may be involved in the DDoS attack LJ has been trying to mitigate - it's looking like it's getting blocked at the firewall, which is the sort of thing they'd be likely to do if you were getting flooded with requests which included that word for some reason.

The phrase "trolled by bantown" is also banned from comments, but in a different way - you get a blank page in response. I asked Support about this one a while ago; apparently they'd been getting it in a bunch of spam comments, so they filtered it out.

BTW, the way I'm posting these blocked phrases is by surrounding parts of them with a span. For example, to post DPNI, I typed "D<span>PN</span>I". Neat way to avoid filters without messing with the appearance.

I just tried three times to post d-p-n-i on a private post, and it wouldn't go through, but when I posted something else it went right through.

I'm located in New York.

While this is an interesting and possible alarming situation, it really does not have anything to do with the purpose of this community. With so many folks on board now and all the high traffic, it is tempting to use it as a test platform for various things like this.

Please refrain from doing so. This is in the guidelines:

Please avoid posting speculative or fearmongering articles- what they're already doing is bad enough without adding fuel (and foilhattery) to the fire. (The moderators have the ability to do research, and will do so, to determine if an article falls into this category.) Again, save stuff like that for your own blogs.

Please use discretion in posting 'act now!' articles. They must be relevant to the subject discussed.

Please respect the size and topic of this community and avoid future posts of this sort.

Thank you.

I live in MA and it won't d-p-n-i won't post here either. Is it alright if I bring this concern up with of few other communities concerned with censorship? I'll see if they know anything or can figure it out.

[info]fragiletender

June 4 2007, 02:59:47 UTC 4 years ago

You can post it on if you like but it's been resolved - LJ have responded and it's a temporary block relating to the current DDOS attacks. Please see my journal or further down the thread for more info.
